The Xbox system error E74 is a graphics processing unit error message that comes up, xbox, when the GPU over heats. The graphics processing unit is one of the two main chips on the Xbox 360, the other one being the central processing unit or CPU. These chips are vital to the operation of your Xbox 360. The E74 error message is a very common problem and happens in thousands of Xbox’s out there. It is caused by the X-clamps malfunctioning.

The X-clamps and “X” shaped pieces of metal inside the Xbox that hold the heat sinks on the CPU and the GPU.

When you play the Xbox these pieces of metal heat up and cool down when you shut it off. The repeated heating and cooling of X-clamps causes them to weaken or lose their downward pressure over time. The Xbox system error e74 is a common problem with the Xbox 360. It will make your Xbox unplayable but it is not dead. This happens over time when you play your Xbox. Each time you play your Xbox you heat it up, when you stop playing it cools off.

This heating and cooling process makes the X-clamps weak overtime. The X-clamps are the pieces of metal that hold the heat sink on the the graphics processing unit and the central processing, xbox, unit also known as the GPU and CPU. When the metal gets weaker over time it will cause the heat sink to lose pressure on the chips allowing them, xbox, to over heat and malfunction.
